International Staff Week in Reykjavík, Iceland: A Memorable Experience

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in an International Staff Week in Reykjavík, Iceland, alongside colleagues from Karolinska Institutet and over 30 other participants from educational institutions across Europe and South Africa. Hosted by Reykjavik University (RU), the event focused on the theme of wellbeing at the university.
Despite being relatively young and private, with around 3,500 students, RU stands out for its international focus and innovative approaches to education and research. The university boasts extensive industry collaboration and a thriving startup culture. One highlight was a presentation by a computer science researcher who showcased advanced digital information systems she had developed. It was fascinating and heartwarming to learn about the apps and devices and their positive impact on users, including healthcare workers and patients.
A key takeaway from the week was the importance of conscious communication in enhancing wellbeing in both personal and professional settings. During a training session, we practiced being mindful and non-interfering in verbal interactions. This exercise demonstrated that holding space and being silent in a conversation can be just as powerful and important as speaking. The “Happiness Shower” session added a joyful touch, reminding us to be present in the moment and appreciate the small things in life.
Another highlight was the guided tour of the Golden Circle, which took us through some of Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes. We marveled at the scenery of Þingvellir National Park and felt the wings of history while passing the ancient site where the Althing, one of the world’s oldest parliaments, was established. Our lovely hosts made the experience even more memorable with an impromptu Icelandic folk song! The majestic Gullfoss waterfall was extensively documented by our cameras, and as the sun set, we soaked in the relaxing and steaming waters of the Secret Lagoon, reflecting on the day’s adventures.
Spending time with education professionals from other countries, exchanging ideas, practices, and experiences while enjoying a new culture together was incredibly rewarding. It fostered a stronger sense of European camaraderie. I also cherished the quality time spent with my fellow KI colleagues. In the daily hustle and bustle of the office, it’s often difficult to take breaks for longer conversations. This week provided a valuable opportunity to connect on a deeper level and strengthen our professional and personal bonds.
If you ever get the chance to participate in staff mobility training, seize it! Whether you’re looking to develop your skills, expand your European network, or simply learn more about the host university’s country and culture, a staff week is an opportunity not to be missed. And if it happens to be in Iceland, prepare to be amazed by the Land of Fire and Ice!
Acknowledgment to Erasmus+ and NeurotechEU for making this staff mobility training possible with their grants.
