From October 14-17, 2024, Reykjavik University hosted an engaging and interactive International Staff Week in Reykjavik, Iceland. This event brought together 40 participants from 12 different countries, creating a vibrant and diverse atmosphere.
A Professionally Organized Program
The four-day program was meticulously organized, offering participants a comprehensive overview of Reykjavik University. Attendees had the chance to learn about the university’s academic and administrative departments, as well as its partnership within the NeurotechEU program. The event also featured networking receptions and shared dinners, providing ample opportunities for guests to connect and exchange ideas. A guided tour offered a glimpse into the stunning nature of Iceland, adding a unique touch to the experience.
Key Discussions and Insights
Throughout the week, numerous ideas were discussed, particularly regarding student and staff exchanges between partner institutions. A crucial takeaway was the importance of improving information flow to ensure a steady exchange program. For the representatives from KI, the “know-how” and best practices shared during the event were invaluable, as were the international contacts made with collaborators.
In-Depth Presentations and Discussions
During the intense and inspiring four days, participants exchanged experiences, ideas, and insights. We gained an overview of Reykjavik University’s internal structure and delved into key topics such as industry collaboration, student and researcher orientation, and innovation in start-up companies. The discussions on digital information systems in research and the medical field were particularly enlightening. Additionally, participants learned about conscious communication practices and essential networks to stay updated on the latest trends and challenges in the international working environment. The week concluded with a networking session focused on future collaboration opportunities.
Building Relationships and Networks
The Staff Week was not just about presentations and discussions; it was also about building relationships and networks. One of the highlights was a guided day bus trip through the Golden Circle, followed by a light lunch at Efsti Dalur farm. These relaxed activities provided more time for participants to strengthen connections with colleagues and establish professional networks that will be invaluable in the future.
A Rejuvenating Experience
A Staff Week is not only an opportunity to develop one’s skills and knowledge but also a chance to build relationships that can be hard to establish at larger conferences. The close interaction over the course of an entire week made it easier to share experiences, brainstorm ideas, and gain new perspectives from colleagues facing similar challenges in other countries.
